1
Give your child the book.
You introduce it before Christmas. Wrap the book and any additional letters and envelopes, and leave it as a surprise from the North Pole, placing it by the tree, or reading it together. The story sets up the idea that Santa knows every family’s Christmas can look different.

Choose your family’s celebration date.
Pick the day Dad is home and can truly be present: perhaps Christmas Eve, December 26, or another day after his shift. That becomes your official Family Christmas Day™.

Your child writes to Santa.
The tradition includes a special Letter to Santa. Your child writes that Dad will be working on Christmas Day and gives Santa the date your family will celebrate instead. The publisher says the letter “ensur[es] Santa will make an extra stop” on the chosen Family Christmas Day.[santastopstwice]

Send or “deliver” the letter.
You can put it in the mailbox, leave it for an elf if your family uses one, tuck it under the tree, or create your own North Pole mailbox. The practical point is that your child takes part in asking Santa for the alternate-date visit.

Keep Christmas Day cozy.
You can still do pajamas, a small stocking, hot cocoa, a call or message to Dad, cards for him, or a Christmas movie. But you save the main Santa gifts and big breakfast for Family Christmas Day.

Santa visits again on Family Christmas Day.
On the date you chose, the children wake to the main presents or Santa surprise. You can leave the Santa letter nearby or add a short reply note: “Your letter reached the North Pole—I’m happy to make an extra stop for your family.”

A Christmas Storybook Sent From the North Pole
Santa Stops Twice™ is a Christmas storybook created for families when Mom or Dad has to work on Christmas Day.
Delivered to your child from the North Pole, the story explains that Santa already knows their parent has to work and he has a special plan just for families like theirs.

A Tradition That Began With One Family
What happens when Dad has to work on Christmas Day?
As the wife of a firefighter and mom of two little girls, I wanted our family to have the joy of celebrating our Christmas together on another day when Dad was home AND I also wanted to wake up with my girls December 25 and experience the magic of Christmas morning, even when he was away working.
So I created a tradition called Santa Stops Twice™.
Santa would still stop by on December 25, leaving one special gift from their wishlist and a filled stocking. Then, on our chosen day when our whole family could be together, Santa would stop again for our Family Christmas Day™.
What began as a way to make Christmas magical for my own family became something I knew other families needed, too.
